PROVENANCE
Spink, private treaty 10 March 1961, sold to a distinguished collector as a substitute for Lockett XII lot 2655
Acquired by Spink from Chandon de Brialles, Ettiene Bourgey, June 1959, with ticket. The run of Seleucia Tetradrachms in Bourgey's sale of Part II of Chandon de Brialles appears to stop short of the issue from which this example was taken, with this particular coin being acquired by Spink around the time of the first part of the sale on 17 June 1959.
A letter from George Muller of Spink, written to the distinguished collector on 2nd March 1961, reads the following:
"Sir,
I have pleasure in confirming my telephone call to you about the Lockett Sale.
We were only successful in purchasing two coins, one on the first day, and one on the second day. I am sending these to you herewith, together with a duplicate for Lot 2655, which I can offer you at almost 25% below the price fetched at the Sale, and certainly in equal condition. I hope you will be pleased.
I must thank you again for entrusting us to bid for you at the sale.
We beg to remain, Sir,
Yours obedient servants,
for SPINK & SON LTD.,
George Muller
