Jan van Leiden (1509-1536), was an influential leader and self-professed prophet of the Protestant movement of Anabaptism. Upon moving to Münster in 1534 he set out to convert the city. However, the movement was quashed by the Prince-Bishop of the region, in what came to be called the Münster Rebellion. The city was seized by official forces, Leiden was subsequently captured and sentenced to death in 1536.
