The Plantagenets (5), Henry II (1154-1189), 'Shortcross' Penny, Class 1b, London, Iohan, hENRICVS '• REX, crowned bust facing, with sceptre left, curls 2/5, rev. + IOhAN • ON • LVND, voided short cross with quatrefoils of pellets in angles, 1.39g [21.45grns], 11h (North 963; Spink 1344), some die softness to high points, otherwise darker cabinet tone, on a pleasingly full round flan, about very fine, scarce; additionally, John 'Lacklands' (1199-1216), 'Shortcross' Penny, Class 5c, Durham, Pieres, hENRICVS REX, crowned facing bust with sceptre left, rev. + PIERES • ON • DVR, voided short cross with quatrefoils of pellets in angles, 1.47g [22.69grns], 2h (Woodhead 37 = Pheatt 749; Allen 582/582; North 971; Spink 1352), some peripheral striking softness, otherwise with a pleasing tone, very fine or better, scarce; also, Henry III (1216-1272), 'Longcross' Penny, Class Vg, London, Henry, hENRICVS REX • III, crowned bust facing, with sceptre, rev. hENRI ON LVNDE, voided long cross, trefoil of pellets in angles, 1.35g [20.83grns], 6h (North 997; Spink 1373), some slight striking softness to the peripheries, otherwise with a vibrant cabinet tone, a pleasingly good very fine; another, Edward I (1272-1307), 'Longcross' Penny, Class 3a, London, + EDVV R' ANGL 'DNS HyB, crowned facing bust, rev. CIVITAS LONDON, long cross and trio of pellets in angles, 1.23g [18.98grns], 12h (North 1016; Spink 1387), slightly chipped to the edge at 6 o'clock, otherwise with a pleasing dark tone and clear portrait, very fine, the reverse better still; lastly, Edward II (1307-1327), Longcross Penny, Class 14, London, + EDWAR ANGL DNS hyB, crowned bust facing, E with angular back, rev. CIVITAS LONDON, long cross and trio of pellets in angles, 1.37g, 1h (North 1065; Spink 1460), with a vibrant cabinet tone, very fine or better (5)
