Auction: 23006 - The Official COINEX Auction at Spink
Lot: 89

The John Chatwin Collection | Harold II Godwinesson (5 January - 25 October 1066), "PAX" Type, Penny, York, Authulfr, + HAROLD REX ANGL, crowned head left, sceptre before, rev. OVÐVLF ON EOFERP, PAX across field, 1.44g, 12h (SCBI 2 [Hunterian], 1221 same dies; North 836; BMC I [Coll. no. 18]; Spink 1186), struck with a weak obverse die, otherwise lightly toned, strictly fine / near very fine

Provenance

From the John Chatwin Collection of English Hammered Coins

SNC, December 1985, no. 8691* - "rare, F" - £295

Presumably:

SCMB, September 1956, no. 6986 - "nearly F/good F" - £5.15.0

SCMB, April 1956, no. 5808 - "nearly F/good F, R" - £5.15.0

with antique collector's ticket, no. 32, with Hawkins 230 reference, and pencil notations, stating:

Daniels, [by private treaty], 11 May 1905 - £0.8.6

ergo:

Thomas and David Pennant, The Right Honourable, the Earl of Denbigh, Sotheby's, 8 May 1905, lot 155 [part] - "....and Harold II (CVÐVLF ON EOFERI), the last very rare..."

It is noteworthy that both the reverse legend mistranscription, and the over-identification of the type as 'very rare' are replicated onto the accompanying ticket with this lot. It is presumed therefore that this is a Pennant (Earl of Denbigh) ticket
