Auction: 23004 - Ancient and British Coins - Featuring the 'White Rose' Collection
Lot: 546

George I (1714-1727), Half-Guinea, 1718, first laureate head right, rev. crowned shields cruciform, emblem-adorned sceptres in angles, six strings to harp, five hearts to Hanoverian shield, edge obliquely milled, 4.18g [64.6grns], 6h (Ellerby 84-87; MCE 266; EGC 533 [recté]; Spink 3635), some radiating die flaws and die cudding in legends, otherwise a delightful little gem, handsomely lustrous and lightly honey-golden toned, near extremely fine, the reverse better still and remarkably free from the typical Hanoverian Garter star flawing

In comparison to the Uvedale specimen (Spink Numismatic e-Circular, 22 September 2021, lot 6731), that achieved a lofty NGC MS63 [Joint Top Pop] certification, the freshness of the present example is clear - the Garter star is bold and unflawed - a key weakness on vast swathes of the Hanoverian specie. Only one of the four examples of this date-type recovered from the Ellerby Area Hoard (Spink 280, 7 October 2022) exhibited a problem free Garter star
