Auction: 23004 - Ancient and British Coins - Featuring the 'White Rose' Collection
Lot: 543
Anne (1702-1714), Post-Union, Half-Guinea, 1710, diademed and draped bust left, stop after DEI, rev. crowned shields cruciform, emblem-adorned sceptres in angles, five strings to harp, edge obliquely milled, 4.24g [65.4grns], 6h (Ellerby -; MCE 233; EGC 489; Spink 3575), light haymarking to hair and hints of cabinet friction causing brightness in otherwise playfully lustrous fields, near extremely fine, scarce a technically impressive and scarce survivor on account of prominent 'soft detailing' uniformity
Whilst the remarkable Ellerby Area Hoard (Spink 282, 7 October 2022) was dominated by Guineas and Unites, the inclusion of Half-Guineas within the trove afforded the market observer and economic historian a rare glimpse into the original mintage of this fractional series. It is noteworthy that no 1710 issue was present.
