Richard II (1377-1399), Type Ia, Noble, Calais, RIC [over EDW]/ARD [ ] REX ANGL’ Z FRANC DN’S hIB’ Z AQVIT, saltire stops, King standing in ship, with sword and shield, flag at stern, rev. IhC AVTEM TRANSIENS PER MEDIV ILLORVM IBAT, double saltire stops, floriate cross, Rin panel at centre, trefoils, lion and crown in each angle, all within tressure, trefoils in spandrels, 7.71g [119.0grns], i.m. cross pattée (Doubleday 316, same obverse die; Schneider I, 158/-; Stewartby Ia; North 1305; Spink 1659), a spademarked, crimped and straightened field find with resultant 'stubble rash' surfaces, otherwise on a full flan with residual lustre in recesses, the die-sinker's alteration to the King's name pleasingly clear, and as identified by Stewartby 'the only known altered Calais Ia Noble of Richard II' from the Post-Treaty obverse die, extremely rare thus
