William I (1066-1087), 'Canopy' Type, Penny, 1070-1072, Exeter, Sæweard, + PILLEMVS REXI, c crowned bust facing beneath canopy with two columns, rev. + SÆPEARD ON EXECI, double quadrilateral with incurved sides, fleury at angles, 1.32g [20.4grns], 5h (Montagu II, 198 = Walters 144 = Lockett 2853 = Brettell 263 same dies; EMC 2013.0411; North 843; BMC III; Spink 1252), some slight softness to the face, otherwise with a pleasing iridescent tone and of excellent fabric, a pleasing very fine a really good very fine, an extremely rare type and first to be offered for over two decades at global public auction
