Edward the Confessor (1042-1066), 'Hammer Cross' Type, Penny, 1059-1062, Oxford, Beorhtræd, + EADPAR-RD REX, crowned bust right, sceptre before, rev. + BRIHTRED ON OX: N reverse-barred, voided short cross with 'hammer cross' terminals, 1.31g [20.2grns], 12h (Grantley 1214b; SCBI 9 [Ashmolean], 971-974, cf. 974 same dies; North 828; BMC XI; Spink 1182), on a pleasingly full flan, the obverse darkly toned, with orange hues to the reverse, a magnificently 'fresh' strike, good extremely fine and much as issued, rare in this condition and very rare with only three parallels traced, all in the Ashmolean collection
