"This group of coins (lots 1-146), believed to have been found in Poland, contains a number of very rare and interesting items, chief of which are the two Canute helmet type pennies of the mints of Axbridge and Torksey and the unique Canute jewel cross penny of Exeter. Other rarities include a Canute short cross type penny of Cricklade and an Edward the Confessor radiate type penny of Wallingford. Many of the coins are from dies not recorded in Hildebrand or the Copenhagen sylloges. The purely Scandinavian element, although small, represents the first offering of this type of material in London for several years. These latter are mostly barbarous to a greater or lesser degree and have therefore been catalogued under types rather than by reign or mint. Every coin in the hoard is illustrated. This coin, due to its extra reverse decoration, was listed as 'possibly unique'. No other examples struck from these dies are listed on EMC."
