Mercia, Cynethryth, wife of Offa († after 798), 'Light Coinage', Penny, Canterbury, Eoba, EOBA before Imperial [Faustina Senior (?)] female bust right, crucifix behind, pellets and trefoils in fields, beaded border, rev. •+• C•FNEÐRFÐ • REGINA, pellet above N, uncial M, bar above, eight pellets in voids, 1.23g [19.0grns], 12h (Chick 138, unlisted; CEB 117-118; North 339; Spink 909), slight crimping to flan, and wisps of porosity, otherwise pleasingly struck up, and of exceptionally fine style, of excellent fabric, perhaps even the original model by which the 'Royal Moneyer' Eoba dissipated the first English coin to portray a female ruler, good very fine / near extremely fine, excessively rare, an outstanding coin and previously unpublished
