Kent, Ecgberht (c. 765-780), Penny, Light Coinage, Canterbury, Udd, +ECGBERHT, Rx (REX) monogram in centre, rev. : UDD : in central pelleted-cartouche flanked by tri-colons, ornamented cross above and below - these flanked by trefoils, 1.13g [17.4grns], 8h (EMC 2022.0388 this coin; Naismith 87k-m; Williams I, lot 1; SCBI I [Fitzwilliam], 428; BMC I; North 200; Spink 874), trace porosity across lightly toned and 'field found' surfaces, otherwise of sound fabric, an usual reverse die with less ornamentation than usually met with on this extremely rare series, a pleasingly bold very fine, intensely desirable thus as one of 'England's 'First Penny'
