The Royal Navy Officer's uniforms and accoutrements worn by Captain J. B. Glencross D.S.O., R.N., who spent almost his entire career of some thirty-plus years as an officer in the 'silent service', from its earliest days in the post-Edwardian era through to the eve of the Second World War, (Lot)
Comprising:
(i)
A Full Dress tailcoat, dark blue with a double row of gilt Royal Navy buttons to front, laced to the rank of Captain R.N.
(ii)
A short 'working' or 'reefer'-style jacket, dark blue with gilt Royal Navy buttons (via photographic evidence, believed to have been worn by Glencross on various submarines).
(iii)
A Full Dress cocked hat, gold bullion twist to right, marked Glencross to inside lining; a pair of heavy gold bullion epaulettes, ranked to a Captain; two pairs of white kid-leather gloves; three tie-on epaulettes, ranked to a Commander R.N., all contained within a bespoke tin trunk, by Gieve, Matthews & Seagrove Ltd., named J.B. Glencross R.N. and Lieut. Glencross. R.N. c/o Miller & Co. Devonport to the top.
All items commensurate with age: the Full Dress tailcoat in good condition, some minor repairs; 'reefer' jacket with much evidence of wear and a tear to the left inside arm; cocked hat missing gold lace to fore and aft tips, missing button to bullion twist and interior lining with much wear; tin trunk with surface rust, knocks, dents, and interior red velvet lining present but worn.
