The Kaiser-i-Hind group of three awarded to Lieutenant-Colonel F. J. Dewes, Indian Medical Service

Frederick Joseph Dewes was born at Dum Dum, India in 1861 but returned to Britain for his education at Queen Elizabeth's School, Atherstone. Appointed Surgeon with the Madras establishment on 1 October 1887, he served in this capacity attached the 2nd Regiment of Goorkha (Light) Infantry during the disturbances in the wake of the 3rd Anglo-Burmese War. Later Dewes was to see further service in the country during the Chin-Lushai Expedition- likely with the same unit given their continued involvement.

Promoted Surgeon Captain prior to the Tirah expedition Dewes was still with the Indian Medical Service at the time and joined the 44th N.F.H. He further earned the Punjab Frontier 1897-98 clasp with them. Dewes was advanced Surgeon Major on 1 October 1899 and finally further advanced Lieutenant-Colonel on 1 October 1907. Awarded the Kaisar-i-Hind on 1 January 1909 he continued to work until 12 September 1921, retiring to Britain. He settled at 4 Duke Street Piccadilly, London and died at a nursing home on Blackheath on 13 July 1939; sold together with copied research comprising medal rolls, census data and London Gazette extracts.
