Edmund Staveley was born in London in 1836, son of Thomas and Eliza. The Staveley's were a fairly distinguished family: an uncle, William Staveley, fought in the Peninsular War, at the Battle of Waterloo (for which he was made Companion of the Bath) and was Commander & Lieutenant-Governor of Hong Kong in 1847 before going on to command both the Madras and Bombay armies. Meanwhile, Edmund fought during the Indian Mutiny and was involved in the final operations leading to the surrender of Lucknow and clearance of the surrounding areas (Medal and Clasp); retiring in 1887 with the honorary rank of Major-General (London Gazette, 19 January 1887, refers), Staveley died at Tavistock in Somerset on 5 December 1914 at the age of 78.
