Wayne S. Hughes - or Emlyn to his friends and comrades - served for some 27 years in the Parachute Regiment, with wide and varied campaign service. He served with 'A' Company, 3 Para, in Afghanistan during 2006 and is mentioned in Stuart Tootal's Danger Close, firstly when he was lucky to escape a rocket strike to their FSG tower and latterly when he was instrumental in stopping rocket attacks in Musa Qaleh. Hughes was provided the opportunity to present his theory to the Lieutenant-Colonel. It took just two days for him to be proven correct, when they called in an A-10 to centre and attack the positions he had identified. As Tootal recalled:

'The mortar attacks against the district centre dropped off noticeable and Emlyn gave me an embarrassed smile and looked at the floor when I went to congratulate him.'

Throughout his career he specialisted in HUMINT and having left the British Army, has worked to investigate War Crimes and to provide other specialist private security skills. He had also earned a GOC Commendation (Iraq) and a Joint Service Commanders Commendation (Afghanistan); sold together with copied documents, extracts and research.
