Royal Navy L.S. & G.C., G.V.R. (K.20301 R. W. Greenwood. S.P.O. H.M.S. Berwick.), heavy contact marks and wear, fine

Robert Watt Greenwood was born at Glasgow, Lanarkshire on 18 December 1883 and enlisted with the Royal Navy on 31 December 1913 as a Stoker class II at the shore base H.M.S. Vivid III. First posted afloat aboard H.M.S. Orien on 4 February 1914 he was promoted Stoker class II with her on 1 August of that year.

He was still with this vessel two years later when she steamed into action at the Battle of Jutland as part of the 2nd Battle Squadron under Captain- Later Admiral- Oliver Backhouse. She was noted as being particularly accurate in her shooting during the Battle with German observers noting the tightness of the grouping from her salvoes. One shell hit Markgraf and destroyed a turret and fully six salvoes struck the Lutzow, Admiral Hippers flagship. Orion fired 51 shells from her 13.5 inch guns during the fighting.

Continuing to serve Greenwood left Orion on 17 March 1920 having served with her for the entire war. He was promoted several times during the inter-war period becoming Stoker Petty Officer on 30 May 1925 and Chief Stoker on 28 February 1933. Pensioned on 25 August 1935 he returned to duty on 2 July 1940 at Drake II as Chief Stoker (pensioner). Greenwood served for the next four years beinf returned to the 'A' class Reserve on 20 September 1945.
