George Henry Porter was born at Albury, near Guildford in May 1857 and was a Railway Porter upon his joining the Royal Marine Artillery at Reading on 11 May 1876. He was thence made Gunner on 22 December 1876, Bombardier on 2 January 1879, Corporal on 1 January 1881, Sergeant on 9 February 1884 and Colour-Sergeant on 16 April 1891. Ansell was issued his Egypt Medal & clasp on 14 February 1885, his L.S. & G.C. Medal on 12 June 1886 and the Meritorious Service Medal on 8 October 1926. He had retired on 10 May 1897.
