Four: Sergeant D. V. Van Der Merwe, 4th Battery, 2nd Anti-Aircraft Brigade, South African Artillery, who was taken a Prisoner of War at the Fall of Tobruk

David Barend Van Der Merwe was born on 3 August 1916 at Wellington, Cape Provence and was an apprentice miner by trade, upon his joining the South African Artillery in August 1940. He had served some 18 months in the Regiment de la Rey and was posted to the 4th Battery, 2nd Anti-Aircraft Brigade, South African Artillery. Disembarked at Mombasa on 8 September 1940, he was made Temporary Sergeant on 1 March 1942 but was taken a Prisoner of War on 20 June 1942. Released from captivity, he was returned to England on 21 April 1945 and was thence admitted to hosptial on a number of occasions. He was released in February 1946; sold together with copied Service Record.
