Arthur Frank Arnall was born at Wandsworth on 9 June 1899 and was an electricians mate upon joining the Royal Navy in June 1915. He joined the newly-commissioned battleship Royal Oak in May 1916 and was present at the Battle of Jutland. Having remained in the service, he joined the Royal Fleet Reserve in the late 1920s.
With the outbreak of the Seond World War, Arnall served aboard York and was present when she was disabled at Suda Bay by two Italian explosive motorboats of the Regia Marina assault Flotilla Decima Flottiglia MAS. He also served aboard Queen Elizabeth and earned a 'mention' (London Gazette 30 May 1944, refers) by War's end.
