1939-45 Star; Atlantic Star; War Medal 1939-45, in box of issue, this addressed to 'Mrs F. I. Privett, 33 Millpond Road, Gosport, Hants.', together with Admiralty condolence slip in the name of 'Walter Charles Privett', good very fine (6)
Walter Charles Privett was born at Alverstone, Hampshire on 16 February 1900. Enlisting at the training establishment Impregnable as Boy Class II on 16 March 1916, Privett was later posted to the Battleship Orion on 25 February 1917. Attaining his Majority aboard that vessel he was promoted first Ordinary Seaman and soon after Able Seaman.
Posted ashore to the torpedo school Vernon Privett was posted by Vernon to H.M.S. Stokes Bay. With the end of the war Privett saw service aboard a number of other ships including the converted depot ship Greenwich, the destroyers Raider and Whitehall. Finally posted ashore to Vernon on 24 November 1928.
Walter Charles Privett was lost overboard from the Tribal-class destroyer Afridi when the she stationed in Britain just prior to the opening moves in the Norway Camapaign; sold together with an original photograph of the recipient wearing his medals, a selection of Naval shoulder flashes, riband bar, cap tallies for the Despatch, Erebus, Victory, Dolphin and Vernon and a ships whistle.
