Leslie Oliver Probert enlisted with the Royal Navy on 1 October 1915 as Boy Class II. Posted to H.M.S. Chatham on 18 May 1916 he reached his majority with this ship on 26 May, the same day that she struck a mine off the Norfolk coast and had to be towed back to Britain. Promoted Able Seaman on 12 October 1917 Probert remained with this vessel for the rest of the war being posted back ashore on 25 October 1919.
Re-mustering as Stoker Class I on 9 June 1919 with the number k58557 he continued to serve on various ships including Cameron, Warspite and Ambrose. He was invalided ashore on 17 March 1916.
