Albert Henry Rich Horsewell was born at Hammersmith, London on 24 October 1899. Enlisting as Boy Class II on 7 August 1915 his first posting afloat was with H.M.S. Repulse from 22 July 1916. Promoted Ordinary Seaman aboard this vessel on 24 October 1917 shortly before its participation in the Second Battle of Heligoland Bight. During the fighting she was able to land a telling blow on the Königsberg.
Horsewell was further promoted Able Seaman aboard Repulse on 9 March 1918 but left her later that year. After a spell ashore he was posted to Vulcan, a Torpedo Boat Depot ship. Transferred to Ajax on 30 December 1919 Horsewell was with her during the Odessa evacuation when White Army on the South Russian theatre was taken off from the Ukrainian port. After this Ajax undertook a supporting role of the British and White Russian efforts in the Caucasus. Present at Smyrna for the Great Fire and during the Chanak Crisis Horsewell left Ajax on 14 October 1921 for Empress of India. Promoted Leading Seaman on 1 November 1921 he continued to serve for some time including another stint aboard Repulse and one on Dragon. While at Canterbury he was promoted Petty Officer on 27 September 1927; sold together with copied service records, an article on H.M.S. Vulcan and a copied photograph.
