Francis Barzella Bult was born at Pauteg, Monmouthshire in 1877, the son of Thomas and Happy Bult. He listed is previous military service as being with the Surrey Brigade Company, Army Service Corps and worked as a Sorter at the General Post Office prior to attestation. Entering the war in France on 22 December 1914 with 96th Company, Army Service Corps attached to the 27th Division and later 55th Division.

After the war Bult returned to the Post Office becoming Overseer, London Postal Region, it was in this capacity that he was awarded the Imperial Service Medal in February 1937.
