Joseph Goss was born at St. Anns, Nottingham on 28 September 1891 and worked as a Garden prior to enlisting on 6 August 1910. Posted to ‘C’ Company, Plymouth Division on 1 June 1910, he was still with this unit on the outbreak of the Great War. Seeing service with Diana and later Isis in 1914 and early 1915 he was later posted to H.M.S. Liverpool on 21 July 1915.
Liverpool served on detached duty hunting commerce raiders off East Africa in 1915 before joining the Italian Navy at Brindisi in November 1915. Here she was employed in actions keeping the Austro-Hungarian navy penned in the Adriatic forcing the destroyer Wildfang back to port in February 1916. She missed the Battle of the Otranto Straight as a result of communication problems as well as being in a poor state of readiness.
Transferred to the Aegean Squadron Liverpool, with Goss still aboard her, was sent to the Black Sea to support the White Russian forces engaged in South Russia.
Goss left Liverpool on 13 May 1919 and was discharged on 24 January 1920, enrolling with the Royal Fleet Reserve. He was to serve with this formation until 27 September 1931; sold together with copied research comprising medal rolls and service papers as well as a CD containing copies of the research.
