Henry John Barrett was born at Marylebone on 29 October 1888 and was a shop assistant prior to joining the Royal Navy on 17 December 1907. During the Great War he served aboard Intrepid from 10 January 1913-7 March 1915 and Penelope from 16 September 1917-9 July 1917. He was awarded his L.S. & G.C. Medal in 1922 and was pensioned ashore on 16 December 1929. Returned to the fold on 28 September 1938, he was posted to the Chatham Naval Hospital on 29 August 1939 and was promoted Temporary Acting Warrant Wardmate.
