John Hobbs was born at Cleave, Old Somerset on 23 September 1863 and joined the Royal Navy on18 March 1879. Having earned his LS. & G.C. Medal on 3 January 1896, he was still in the service on the outbreak of the Great War. Hobbs would serve aboard Talbot from 13 September-23 November 1914, which captured a German merchantman in September 1914, Defiance from 24 November 1914-10 May 1916 and Briton from 11 May 1916-14 November 1918. He was demobilised on 19 February 1919.
