Francis John Hawkes was born at Barry Dock, Glamorgan, on 18 October 1893 the son of Lewis John Hawkes. Working as a Bootmaker on the outbreak of war Hawkes soon enlisted on 2 September 1914 being posted to 290 Battery, Royal Field Artillery the next month on 20 October. Appointed Saddler on 19 July 1915, doubtless on the strength of his previous career. Hawkes was still serving in that rank when he was discharged on 27 January 1919; sold together with copied service records and a locket containing a photograph of the recipient and a women.

Terence Hawkes was born on 11 April 1920, the son of Francis and Martha Hawkes. He was working as a Shipping Clerk and living at 28 Lower Pyke Street, Barry Dock in 1939.
