Alfred Thomas Bond was born at Southmolton, Devon on 10 July 1883. He worked as a Shoemaker prior to enlisting with the Royal Army Service Corps on 5 December 1914 and entering the war in France on 17 January 1915. Bond remained with them for the duration of the war, transferring to the Royal Fusiliers on 8 December 1919. He later transferred again to the Royal Air Force on 22 July 1920 with the service number 344110. Granted the rank of Aircraftman Class II (Shoemaker) Bond was posted to No.1 Forward Engineering Squadron on 8 March 1923. He joined the reserve on 10 March 1926.
