Joseph Hambleton was born in 1872 and enlisted in September 1914. He served in France with the 1st Battalion, Royal Welch Fusiliers from 30 June 1915 and was wounded by gunshot to the face whilst serving with 'D' Company on 25 September 1915. Recovered from those wounds, he returned to the front and was again wounded by gunshot, this time to the leg. Hambleton was transferred to the Royal Defence Corps as an Acting Sergeant as a result of his wounds.
