Pair: Private S. J. King, 15th (1st London Welsh) Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, who was killed in action during the attack on Mametz Wood in the first week of the Battle of the Somme

Stephen Joseph King was born in 1896 the son of Stephen King of 16 Rosemary Street, Islington. Working as a Carpenter prior to enlisting with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers on 1 June 1915 he entered the war in France on 1 December 1915. Posted to the 15th (1st London Welsh) Battalion, they went into the line with other new army units in preparation for the Somme Offensive.

King was temporarily posted to the 123rd Field Company, Royal Engineers on 1 March and served with them until 31 March. The Battalion took part in the attack on Mametz Wood, suffering heavy losses from the well entrenched German defenders. King was killed in action at some stage between 7-8 July, he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial; sold together with copied M.I.C. and service records as well as photographs of the Mametz Wood memorial and Thiepval Memorial.
