Thomas Goodyear was born at Micheldever, Hampshire in 1872. Enlisting with the Suffolk Regiment on 4 September 1888 he was posted to the 2nd Battalion before transferring to the 2nd Battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry on 21 May 1889. Posted to South Africa on 5 November 1899 he saw heavy action during the Second Boer War, being present for the actions at Paardeburg - where they suffered heavily - and Driefontien as well as the Guerrilla phase of the war. Goodyear survived the war and went on to become a postman, winning the Imperial Service Medal for his work in Birmingham in May 1932.
