Herbert Foord was born at Lewes, Sussex in 1882 and enlisted with the Royal Sussex Regiment at Newhaven in 1908. Seeing pre-war service in India he was still with the 1st Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment on the outbreak of the Great War. Entering the war in Mesopotamia, Foord was part of the garrison of Kut that was taken prisoner on 29 April 1916.

Sent to the Afion Kara Hissar prisoner of war camp, Foord soon fell ill. The Ottoman Red Crescent Society sent confirmation of his death as a result of disease on 17 February 1917. Foord was buried at Afion but later exhumed and re-buried in the Baghdad (North Gate) War Cemetery.
