Charles II (1660-1685), Crowns, 1682 over 1 TRICESIMO QVRRTO error [QVARTO over TERTIO] (2), fourth laureate and draped bust right, rev. crowned shields cruciform, six strings to harp, lettered edge downwards, 29.40g, 6h, light scratches in front of face and a small edge flaw, good / fair, scarce; another, rev. seven strings to harp, lettered edge downwards, 29.46g, 6h (Bull 418 [R2]; ESC -; Spink 3359), heavily scratched before face and above head and below date, lightly gilt and three marks at 10, 12, and 2 o'clock suggestive of past mounting, struck details fine / a bold fine, scarce

ESC 65B lists the error edge for 1682, but does not list it for 1682 over 1. Many catalogues over the years have assumed ESC 65B refers to the overdate. Bull has made the same assumption, listing the error edge for 1682 over 1, citing ESC 65B. He does not list the error edge for the unaltered date.


It would seem there is the regular date, which is rare, the overdate, which is not rare, and the error edge, which occurs with both. This poses the question how rare are the error edges? ESC and Bull both give R2 for the error edge. From a quick survey of the appearances at auction over the last twenty years it would seem that for the 1682 over 1 there are three error edges for every four normal edges, making it only slightly rarer. For the unaltered date there is insufficient evidence but presumably it is much rarer. This would indicate that ESC did indeed mean to list the error edge for the overdate, not for the unaltered date.
