Distinguished Service Medal, G.V.R.; 1914-15 Star; British War and Victory Medals with M.I.D. Oak Leaves; Royal Naval L.S. & G.C., G.V.R., mounted as worn, minor contact wear, very fine (5)

[D.S.M.] London Gazette 15 September 1916, the original citation states:

'For Services rendered by Petty Officers and men of the Grand Fleet in the action in the North Sea on the 31st May-1st June 1916'.

Frederick Charles Smith served aboard the H.M.S. Porpoise during the Battle of Jutland. Porpoise was part of the heavily-engaged 4th Destroyer Flotilla which was caught up in the German withdrawal from the Battle on the evening of 31 May. Fighting a desperate rear-guard action through the night with a number of vessels sunk including Tipperary, Turbulent and Rostock as well as Fortune and Black Prince. Whilst Porpoise survived the engagement she was hit a number of times through the course of the battle. No record has been found suggesting an entitlement to a 'mention'; sold together with typed research relating to H.M.S. Porpoise at Jutland.
