John Tinkler entered the war in East Africa on 17 January 1916 serving there until 18 March when he was posted to German South West Africa and served there for the rest of the war, leaving on 20 January 1919. Notably as 20th Battalion did not serve in either of these theatres it must be assumed that Tinkler served attached to another unit. Discharged on 8 March 1919 he returned home to Blaydon-On-Tyne, Northumberland.
