Harry Brabyn was born at Gillingham on 11 September 1891 and joined the Royal Navy from school on 11 September 1909. He served aboard Dominion from 19 August 1911-13 March 1917 during the Great War, having been in the Balkans for the blockade by an international force of Montenegro and in an occupation of Scutari from November 1912.

He served in Coastal Motor Boats in the early 1920s and aboard Cornflower from 29 March 1923-1 March 1925, during which she was on operations in the Red Sea that saw her intercept slavers. Pensioned ashore on 16 September 1931, he was recalled for the Second World War and was aboard Frobisher from 5 October-20 December 1939.
