Enlisting with 6th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers on 31 May 1917 he applied for a commission with the Royal Flying Corps. While this was refused Helsby was recommended for the role of Non-Commissioned Officers with the unit and served attached to the Royal Air Force as an N.C.O. observer from 5 April 1918.
Still only serving attached to the R.A.F Helsby joined 20th Squadron in France. Flying a patrol with 9 other aircraft on 2 July 1918 the formation was ambushed a large number of German machines from Jasta 56, in a running battle the British pilots claimed 3 kills.
