Frederick Denton, of Glasgow, and an Assistant Postman at the time of his enlistment, served in France with the 16th Highland Light Infantry from November 1915. Known for being mostly comprised of members (and ex-members) of The Boys' Brigade, the battalion suffered terrible casualties on 1 July 1916 during the attack on Thiepval - 20 officers and 534 other-ranks by the time they came out of the line two days later. Denton's service is commemorated at Lonsdale Cemetery, Authuille.
