1914-15 Star (Hon. M. Scott.), British War Medal 1914-20 (Capt. Hon. M. Scott.), both individually mounted on contemporary pin-bars for wear, good very fine
Michael Scott was the youngest of the seven children of John Scott (3rd Earl of Eldon) and was born in August 1878 and, after attending Winchester College, emigrated to Australia around 1900. During his time there he came into his own as a very successful golfer, winning the inaugural Australian Open in 1904 and again in 1907, in addition to four Australian Amateur titles in 1905, 1907, 1909 and 1910 respectively.
Returning to Britain in 1911, upon the outbreak of war he joined the British Red Cross Society and served in France from April 1915 as a Chauffeur. Later transferring to the Embarkation Staff and promoted Captain, Scott received a number of decorations for his war work including the Portuguese Order of Aviz and French Order of the Black Star (London Gazette 7 October 1919 and 7 March 1920 refer respectively). He was additionally made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the Honours List of 1919 (London Gazette 1 January 1919 refers).
Post-war, Scott returned to his great passion: he won the French Amateur in 1922 and, in 1933 (at the age of 55), won The Amateur Championship - undoubtedly the greatest achievement of his sporting career, especially as the oldest player to have ever done so. Not resting on his laurels however, he went on the Captain the 1934 Walker Cup team (again going on record as the oldest player at that event) and was Captain of the Royal St. George's Golf Club in Sandwich, Kent.
The Honourable Michael Scott OBE died at the age of 80, in 1959.
