Seven, Leading Stoker A. Vernon, Royal Navy, who saw service at the Battle of Jutland and the later Action of the 19 August aboard H.M.S. Thunderer

Andrew Vernon was born at Dumfries on 21 May 1894. Enlisting on 5 September 1912 at H.M.S. Vivid III with the rank of Stocker Class II he saw service aboard H.M.S. Leander before being promoted Stoker Class I on 5 September 1913. Posted to H.M.S. Thunderer on 1 January 1914 Vernon served aboard her for the bulk of the war. Thunderer was part of the High Seas Fleet which confronted the German Grand Fleet at the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916.

She was eighth ship in the British line at the Battle and was again deployed during the action of 19 August later that year. Promoted Leading Stoker on 3 May 1918 he served largely ashore after 17 March 1920 seeing service afloat three more times aboard the Constance, Warspite and finally Hood with the service number K42447. His records end here however his L.S. & G.C. notes service aboard H.M.S. Queen Elizabeth and his Second World War pair suggests further service. Vernon died at 125 College St, Dumfries on 17 March 1962; sold together with copied medal rolls.
