Three: Private R. Tichborne, 8th Battalion, East Surrey Regiment, who was killed in action on 10 October 1917

Robert Tichborne was born at St. Pancras, London on 23 December 1880, the son of Samuel and Charlotte Tichborne of 38 Drummond Crescent, Marylebone, London. Tichborne joined the East Surrey Regiment on 3 September 1900 and saw service with 2nd Battalion during the Boer War (Medal). With the conclusion of the conflict he continued to serve until 1907 when it is likely he joined the Army Reserve. Joining his father as a House Painter he was working in this profession in 1911 however with the outbreak of war he was swift to re-join the regiment.

Tichborne joined the war in France on 16 August 1914 with 1st Battalion, East Surrey Regiment. He later served with 8th Battalion, who famously charged into battle with a football on the First Day of the Somme. It was with this unit that Tichborne was serving when he was killed in action on 10 October 1917. He is buried at the Bard Cottage Cemetery; sold together with a cap badge, two shoulder titles and three buttons, all pertaining to the East Surrey Regiment as well as copied Research including Commonwealth War Graves details and Service Record.
