1914 Star, with clasp copy (1739 Pte E. Summerfield. 6.Ches:R.); British War and Victory Medals (1739 Pte. E. Summerfield . Ches. R.), very slight edge bruise, very fine (3)

Ernest Summerfield was born in 1895 and a resident of Chorley prior to the Great War. Serving with 1st/6th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment he entered the war in France on 10 November 1914. This Battalion was one of those which participated in the 1914 Christmas truce, although their position is hard to pin down. They only entered the trenches on 11 December and were split between more experienced regular Battalions for instruction. Nevertheless their report to the Brigade Headquarters and the reports of several officers and men make it clear that they were involved. Summerfield continued to serve with them throughout the war before transferring to the Labour Corps with the Regimental Number 254294. He was discharged on 5 April 1919.
