David Thompson aged 18 and from Cannongate in Edinburgh, attested for service with the King's Own Scottish Borderers in December 1887 and participated in the rather one-sided Battle of Suakin (otherwise known as the Battle of Gemaizah). During this action the Anglo-Egyptian army lost a mere 12 men killed whereas the forces of the Mahdi sustained casualties of over 1,000.
