(x) Pair: Private W. Barker, 2nd Battalion, Durham Light Infantry

Egypt and Sudan 1882-89, undated reverse, no claps (76. Pte. W. Barker. 2/Durh:L.I.); Khedive's Star, unnamed as issued, polished, pitting suspension loose, nearly very fine

William Barker was born at Molton, Yorkshire in 1859. Attesting with the Durham Light Infantry on 7 November 1881 he saw Home Service until 8 August 1882. Clearly Barker found this service dull and went looking for other diversions, being thrice treated for Gonorrhoea between November 1881- January 1882. Posted to the Mediterranean on 9 August 1882 he was to serve here for several years before transferring to Egypt on 15 February 1885. Here he served with the Nile Expeditionary Force under Brigadier General Butler, an experience he evidently did not enjoy as he was imprisoned on 16 July 1885 for desertion. Barker was then posted to India, remaining here for the next seven years from 7 January 1887- 15 November 1894. Having contracted Scalett Fever at Deolali the previous month he was invalided back to Britain and soon discharged from Service.
