St. Marylebone Infirmary Nursing Qualification Medal (Clara M. Pepper 1911-1914); Territorial Force Nursing Service Badge, nearly extremely fine (2)

Clara Mary Gertrude Pepper was born at Ipswich in 1891 the daughter of Frederick and Clara Pepper. She was baptised on 30 September 1891 at St. Peters, Ipswich. Training as a nurse at the St. Marylebone Infirmary Pepper began her medical career at this institution, at some stage prior to the war she contracted Typhoid Fever but survived the infection. Enrolling with the Territorial Force Nursing Service on 26 December 1914 she was called up for service on 1 February 1915 at No. 4 Northern General Hospital in Lincoln.

Transferring to 2nd Eastern General Hospital at Brighton on 14 May 1917 in order to be closer to her sister Pepper soon began to suffer from complications resulting from the Typhoid she had suffered from at the start of her career. This caused her shortness of breath and swelling in her legs, symptoms which became so bad over time that she was unable to continue her duties and was declared permanently unfit for duty on 28 December 1917. Nevertheless after a period on leave she returned on light duties and a note in the records makes it clear that she was to be returned to general duties as soon as she was well enough. With the end of the war Pepper was demobilised on 30 December 1919 with the following testimonial:

'Miss Pepper is an energetic and reliable Nurse and is very interested in her work. She possesses good Temper and works very willingly. She has acted as Ward Sister for short periods and has rendered good service for four years'

Despite the demobilisation she remained with the Territorials and was promoted Sister on 25 November 1924 on account of her war service. She did not remain long in this roll however resigning in order to marry on 24 January 1927 and later that same year she married William H. Spencer of 20 Ferson Road, Bexley, Kent; sold together with a copied archive comprising 84 pages of service papers, handwritten notes and census data.
