Alfred Charles Munckton was born in 1888. Enlisting pre-War with the Army Service Corps he was living in Eastbourne in 1911 with the rank of Lance-Corporal. He first served during the Great War in German Kamerun from 13 September 1914. Promoted Serjeant, he was back in Britain in October 1915 marrying Annie Chalfont at Eastbourne. Later posted to Mesopotamia with 695 Motor Transport Company Munckton added a 'mention' to his laurels (London Gazette 15 August 1917, refers) and rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant-Major.
