William Walker was born at Derby, Derbyshire in 1895, to Joseph and Elizabeth Walker of Osmaston, Derbyshire. Working as a Colliery Ganger or Trimmer, by 1911 he was lived at Outram Terrace, King Street, Alfreton. Enlisting with the 10th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment), Walker joined the war in France on 28 July 1915. The Battalion was one of the first units to be struck by the German assualt on The Bluff starting on 14 February 1916. They detonated three mines under British positions (two of which hit Walker's Battalion) before attacking the damaged defences along a narrow front. The attack was successful and Walker was one of those killed either upon the detonation of the mines or during the subsequent fighting. He is commemorated upon the Menin Gate Memorial; sold together with copied M.I.C., Commonwealth War Graves details and an extract from a blog post entitled Fighting at The Bluff.
