Sydney Stears was born at St. George's-in-the-East, Middlesex. Enlisting pre-war at Hounslow, Stears served in France from 27 August 1914 with the rank of Sergeant. The Battalion was in on the action during the Battle of Mons and the retreat to the Marne, later they took part in the Race to the Sea and found themselves in the line at Ypres as part of 1st Division. Here they suffered enormous losses during the First Battle of Ypres, with Stears being killed in action on 30 October 1918. He is commemorated upon the Menin Gate Memorial; sold together with Welsh Regiment Shoulder Title and copied research including copied M.I.C. and Commonwealth War Graves details.
