Three: Private H. Smith, 16th Battalion (Chatsworth Rifles), Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment), killed in action in the final days of the battle of Passchendaele on 10 November 1917

Harold Smith was born in 1897, the son of Ada Smith of Thorneywood Rise, Nottingham. Enlisting with 16th Battalion (Chatsworth Rifles), this Battalion entered the war in France on 6 March 1916. Engaged at the Somme they were later moved to Flanders where they fought in several engagements around Ypres including the Battles of Menin Ridge Road, Polygon Wood and finally the Battle of Passchendaele. Here in the Polderhoek section of the line the 16th Battalion moved to relieve the 17th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters on 10 November 1917. During this relief they suffered losses of three killed and 8 wounded, Smith was among the dead of the day. He is commemorated upon the Tyne Cot Memorial; sold together with copied research including Commonwealth War Graves details, a battalion diary covering the period in which Smith was killed, copied MIC as well as an original Sherwood Foresters Cap Badge and 'In Memoriam' card.
